Direct thermal vs thermal transfer: which labels do you need?

Direct thermal labels use a heat-sensitive coating and do not need a ribbon. Thermal transfer printing uses a ribbon to put the image onto compatible label stock. Start with the print methods supported by your exact printer.

Do all thermal printers take the same labels?

No. Check the printer’s process, printable width, core size, maximum roll diameter, media sensing and winding requirements. A brand name or similar-looking roll does not establish compatibility.

What changes when I choose thermal transfer?

You need both suitable label stock and a matching ribbon. Select the combination for your print quality and durability requirements, and follow the printer manufacturer’s loading instructions.

How do I choose labels for cold storage or equipment?

Define the surface, application temperature, storage temperature, moisture exposure and required lifespan. Ask for the material specification and test a sample on the actual surface before committing to volume.

How many labels are in a pack?

Compare the selling unit and pack contents. For example, the sample shipping-label pack in this prototype contains four rolls of 500 labels: 2,000 labels in total. Sample pack prices are illustrative and cannot be used to place an order.

What can I do on this website today?

Browse eight sample products, explore a visual label design and prepare a specification brief. This is a prototype: no orders, payments, enquiries or artwork uploads are sent.
